Utah Medical Marijuana Cardholders Surpass 83,500 in 2024

31 March 2024

Utah’s medical marijuana program continues to expand rapidly, with over 83,500 residents holding medical cannabis cards as of March 2024—a 19% year-over-year increase. This growth, supported by Utah’s Department of Health and ongoing efforts to educate healthcare providers, helped generate $138 million in revenue in 2023, marking a 16% rise from the prior year. Chronic pain, PTSD, and nausea remain the top qualifying conditions for medical cannabis in Utah, demonstrating its role as a vital alternative treatment for many.

Significant changes under Senate Bill 233 (SB 233) will take effect in May 2024, introducing enhanced workplace protections for Utah medical marijuana cardholders, allowing deliveries to workplaces (excluding public spaces), and permitting cannabis manufacturers in Utah to advertise their products to consenting adults. These developments are expected to reduce stigma, improve access, and support the normalization of medical cannabis use in Utah.

With 15 licensed medical cannabis pharmacies and a simplified process for obtaining cards, Utah’s cannabis program is more accessible than ever. As the industry grows, balancing access, safety, and compliance with state laws will remain critical, supported by studies conducted at the University of Utah’s Center for Medical Cannabis.
